Naoto Fukasawa is a Japanese industrial designer and one of my favorites as well. His products are minimalist and discreet – almost as if they want to disappear into the background – and yet they are everywhere. He has worked with most and for the last 30 years, he has designed everything from cell phones to sofas and cloaks. Over the years, Fukasawa has investigated how design can improve the relationship between people and their environment. The most satisfying products are those who remain in the subconscious and calm us, he says.
“ Many designers feel that objects should somehow be stimulating and eye-catching. However, I feel that it’s important that people don’t notice them unless they are needed. I am trying to create a feeling of, ‘I don’t know exactly why, but I feel good.‘ ”
The Japanese designer calls his design philosophy ”Without thought”. He wants users not to think about the object they use, rather, Fukasawa wants them to use them so naturally and so organically that no thought is needed.
